Dream Journal

I've decided to start keeping a dream journal, trying to write down what I remember of my dreams first thing in the morning to try to improve my dream recall.  I've heard that this works, and that you can even start to be self-aware in your dreams from  doing this... which I'm not so sure I do want.  Dreams are pretty surreal places.  Has anyone else tried this?

My main problem is that to me, dreams are entertaining, engaging dips into my weird unconscious.  I relish them, and just want to be able to remember them better so I can continue to enjoy them after I wake up, which for some reason I seem to be pretty bad at, I don't know why.  But trying to write them down feels like work.  My concern is that I'll become just self-aware enough to subconsciously try to forget my dreams in the morning so that I don't have to write them down.  Hm.
