Quiet

“I thought nature was supposed to be quiet!”
she says, laughing,
referring to our little brook
swollen by days of unpredicted rain.

I think of the celebration of sparrows at dawn,
the obsessive whippoorwill perforating the dusk,
peepers filling the spring night with lust,
bees droning through long afternoons and
coyote families singing eerie lullabies to one another
in the August darkness.

I almost say something glib,
such as, “Oh, it’s peaceful, but not quiet,”

but then I think of the howling wind that
freezes the deer caught in deep snow,
the bobcat’s scream, the peregrine falcon
calling and calling for his mate that won’t return,
and I hold my tongue.

I LOVE this. And way not to use nature merely to illustrate some human "meaning."
