In a large teleconference on a highly technical subject you have been given no training in and which has no bearing on your work -- but which you have been required to attend by administrators above your supervisor and even your department head -- no one will notice if you just write fiction in your notebook the entire hour and a half.

In fact, they will assume you are actually taking notes.
